15th of May 2010 was a great day in the cricket history of Waterford Institute of Technology. On that day the city mayor, Alderman John Halligan officially opened the Institute’s cricket ground on the Carriganore Campus.

WIT Cricket Club was founded in 2007 by 20 international students. The Waterford region has a great history of cricket but in 1990s and early 2000 cricket only Lismore club was left.

In late 2003 the arrival of international students in WIT, mainly from Pakistan and India, brought some hope for cricket, and cricket lovers in this region.

Students who initially formed this club in 2007 are: Ali Naseer, Haq Nawaz, Pradeep Sharawat, Sunil Sharawat, Prateek Thakar, Amir Khattak and Adeel Muhammad.

Since 2007 WIT has a great cricket team who reached to the semi final of all Ireland Intervarsity in 2007 and following that won the Munster senior plate in 2008. At that time WIT did not have any cricket ground so the team had no practice place available.

In 2009 WIT decided to provide WIT CC their own ground and it was officially opened on 15th of May.

Following the opening ceremony the first match of the league between WIT and Midleton took place, Mayor of Waterford, Cllr. John Halligan tossed the coin, Midleton elected to have bat first use of the new artificial wicket at the Carriganore venue, with the match reduced to 45 overs.

WIT won that match by 4 wickets, so overall an exciting day for WIT CC.
