Wednesday, 12 May 2010 was designated Healthy Waterford Day by the Mayor of Waterford, Cllr John Halligan. In cooperation with the Waterford Healthy City Group, events to promote health in the community were organised all across the city.
More than twenty "healthy" events were organised across WIT for the day and both students and staff really got involved. There was a focus on health awareness which included exercise stress-busters, cardiopulmonary resuscitation and defibrillator awareness demonstrations and mental health awareness including a stress management workshop. Participants were able to check their blood pressure, body mass index, cholesterol, blood glucose and have a dietary analysis. Activities included a happy heart walk, walk to work / car pool day, a cycle and a gym session. Of course healthy eating forms a big part of a healthy lifestyle and there was healthy eating menus on all campuses, a cooking demo in the Hot House Bistro, healthy baking demonstrations, a country market on campus and a healthy eating quiz. In additiona there were exhibition of education and research from the School of Business, the Department of Architecture, Department of Nursing and Department of Health, Sport and Exercise Science
Overall the day was a great success and with any luck, WIT student and staff will make sure to be a little more healthy in the future.
