Mercy students “graduate” from WIT programme
Posted: Fri, May 14, 2010

A group of six second-level students from Our Lady of Mercy Secondary School in Waterford have been recognised at the school for their successful completion of the first year of a four-year programme that sees students from the school and others in the city pair up with third-level students from Waterford Institute of Technology.

Originally a millennium project and running since 2000, the Buddy Programme sees the school and Institute students meet each week and follow a structured programme that allows the school-goers to sample college life and learn from the experiences of the older students.

Speaking at a recognition event for Naomi Lynch; Dineke McAuley; Teresa O’Rourke; Ala Zwolinski; Jasmine Murphy and Christine Brennan – the Mercy students who have just completed the programme – Aishling O’Toole of Waterford Institute of Technology said, “This is a great partnership that really benefits our own students as well as the students from the various secondary schools.

“For the school-goers, it can help break down any myths that may be out there about college and show them that it’s for everyone. They also get a unique insight to what lectures are like and see the facilities on our campus. For our own students, there’s a chance to develop their personal skills and get new experiences and responsibilities.

“The fact that the young people do this in their own time underlines their commitment to the programme and also adds to the value they get from it as it’s very much about them availing of a good opportunity rather than having something imposed on them.

“The ‘Buddy Programme’ is one of a range of ways that the Institute interacts with schools to help increase completion rates and – down the line - encourage participation in higher education.”
