Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) is a university-level institution in the South-East of Ireland with over 10,000 students and 1000 staff. WIT offers tuition and research programmes in various areas up to PhD level.
Datapac, Ireland’s largest indigenous ICT solutions provider, today celebrates a landmark for its student work placement programme as it welcomes its 75th college student. The Datapac student programme was established to give students six months ‘hands-on’ work experience as part of their undergraduate qualifications. This is coordinated in conjunction with Universities and Institutes of Technology throughout Ireland including Waterford Institute of Technology, Dublin City University, National University of Galway, University College Cork and National University of Maynooth. Datapac has been providing information technologies, business solutions and IT consumables to the Irish market for 28 years. Since its inception, it has institutionalised a policy of creating links with the Irish higher education sector. It officially launched the student work placement programme in 2004. This includes an annual intake of undergraduate students across degree courses to work in Datapac for a six month period. The students gain experience in a wide range of commercial activities within Datapac. This includes day-to-day activities such as sales, marketing and, importantly, customer service. In addition, students will gain exposure to next generation technology solutions in areas such as virtualisation, cloud computing and unified communications. Dr. Thomas O’Toole, Head of School of Business, Waterford Institute of Technology, said, “Datapac’s continued support of student development and training is vital as our students face the most difficult employment market in recent Irish history. Datapac’s commitment to the programme ensures our students have a competitive edge when they look for work after graduation. The smart economy will drive Ireland’s economic recovery, and exposing our students to innovation at an early stage puts us on the road to success.” Karen O’Connor, HR Manager, Datapac, “The student work placement is an essential part of Datapac’s personnel and employee development strategy. We’re always looking to introduce fresh talent into the organisation to bring new insights, perspectives and capabilities. The calibre of Irish students never fails to amaze us and many of our student placements have found fulltime positions in Datapac after they graduate college.” Datapac is Ireland’s largest indigenous ICT solutions provider, in operation since 1982 with offices in Dublin, Wexford and Belfast. Datapac has over 150 employees and more than 6,000 active business customers in Ireland. It provides the most comprehensive information technologies, business solutions and IT consumables portfolio in the country. www.datapac.com
