Work progresses on WIT campus expansion
Posted: Tue, June 8, 2010

Advance work is continuing on two new buildings that will add 12,000 sq metres to the accommodation currently available to staff and students at the main Waterford Institute of Technology campus.

Integrated into the traditional heart of the campus, the new buildings will provide lecture theatres, special purpose laboratories and support space for staff and students from the Schools of Engineering and Business.

At present, John Sisk & Son Ltd are undertaking enabling works that are due to be completed when the next academic year commences in September. The current €2.45m project involves the construction of a new electricity substation, maintenance workshops, chemical stores and refurbishment of existing buildings along with the construction of two car-parks and road realignment within the campus.

The National Development Finance Agency (NDFA) in conjunction with Waterford Institute of Technology is currently in the procurement stage for the two buildings which will be delivered by a public private partnership.

Speaking at the site being prepared for the new facilities, Prof Kieran R Byrne, President, Waterford Institute of Technology, said: “Having created a direct economic impact during the design and construction phase, these latest additions to our main campus will continue to deliver a huge return on investment for higher education in the southeast and Ireland more widely.

“The additional space being created will allow our students and staff access to excellent facilities designed and built to the very highest standard. The quality of the buildings added to the Institute’s campuses over the last decade has been recognised with multiple awards and leave us with an excellent suite of accommodation across all of our programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level.”

With John Sisk & Son Ltd the main contractors, the design team for the works currently underway at the main Waterford Institute of Technology campus includes CJ Falconer & Associates, chartered architects; Healy Kelly Turner & Townsend, project and cost management; Punch Consulting Engineers, civil, structural and safety engineers; Malachy Walsh & Partners, building services engineers; ORS, fire safety consultants and Murray & Associates, landscape consultants.
