16 WIT Students Get Ready For Big Test In Croke Park
Posted: Mon, August 9, 2010 |
As Waterford line out against Tipperary in the semi-final of the GAA All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship this weekend, Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) will again demonstrate its hurling calibre as 16 WIT students don the jerseys for Waterford and Tipperary. The students will be hoping to replicate their many successes in college GAA by reaching the All-Ireland Senior Hurling final in September.
Current WIT student Noel Connors, the young corner back from Passage East who has put in a sterling performance in the Championship so far, will line out with fellow WIT students Jerome Maher, Adrian Power and Shane Fives and six former WIT students in an effort to reach the final in September. And although they will be battling it out against Tipperary next weekend, many of their opponents regularly train with them at the WIT sports facilities at the West Campus.
“This is a big weekend for us as we line out against Tipperary, especially as many of the players on the Tipperary team are fellow students at WIT and have trained with us at the West Campus training grounds. It’s a fantastic facility to have as it allows us to continue training during term time, whatever the weather.” said Noel Connors.
The WIT sports facilities at the West Campus, where the Waterford Senior Hurling team and the Waterford underage hurling and football teams regularly train, is located on the new bypass around Waterford City, making it easily accessible to both the city and county and the neighbouring counties of Kilkenny, Tipperary and Wexford. With facilities including a full size GAA-approved all weather pitch and three full-sized grass and sand-based pitches, the sporting successes of the WIT students can be furthered with easy access to these state-of-the-art facilities.
WIT President, Professor Kieran R. Byrne, said “We are extremely proud of the WIT students, both past and present, who are playing in the semi-final this weekend and we congratulate them for getting this far. In fact, many members of the Kilkenny team who played last weekend are also graduates of WIT and we are delighted that WIT students are making such a big contribution to hurling in their counties. On behalf of all the staff and students at WIT, I’d like to wish all the WIT students and graduates who are playing the very best of luck.”
