Welcome to the Department of Engineering Technology

The Department of Engineering Technology is one of three academic departments within the school of engineering. The department has five engineering programme areas.  These are:

In line with the mission statement of the institute the staff of the department endeavour to apply excellence in teaching, learning and research. The staff of the department seek to create an inclusive student centred environment, in line with the core values of the school.

The department is committed to the development of links between the schools, both primary and secondary, in the region, and the department. This is achieved in many ways, school visits, development of transition year programmes, participation in open days and school competitions run by the various professional bodies. Since the introduction of science into national schools we are adopting some schools and assisting them in the development of the students in engineering and science.

The department is actively involved with the CALMAST group in the institute and has committed both time and resources to ensure the future of this ground-breaking group.

The department has a strong research ethos and is committed to the development of learning and knowledge as defined in the research strategy of the school. To this extent the department has actively encouraged research at undergraduate, post-graduate and post-doctoral levels.

The department has seven key research areas:

  • Advanced Manufacturing Technology
  • Advanced Automobile Electronic Control Group
  • Materials Characterisation and Processing Group (MCP)
  • Microelectronics & Systems Research (MSR) Group
  • Mobile Telecommunications Group
  • Smart Card Technology - Score
  • Semiconductor Research Group (SRG)

The development of a cluster of research groups allows for a vibrant and dynamic research community. This community forms an integral part of the drive and development within the department and ensures that all the programme areas are constantly updating their knowledge.
